HelpLaw Ghana provides free legal assistance to those who are too impoverished to hire lawyers to represent them when confronted with a legal problem. This gives them a fighting chance for equal justice along with the rich and powerful across the country. For this vision of equal justice for all to succeed, it is vital that corporate entities, foundations, human rights organizations, civil liberties groups, philanthropists, and private individuals provide charitable donations to support the quest for justice for the disadvantaged.HelpLaw Ghana had no financial backers during its formation, and the organization is still struggling to attract the requisite funding to make a major impact.
In the beginning, the founder had only a laptop, a small printer, and his knowledge of the law. He worked from home and consulted with clients in court and in the jails and prisons. Even without funding, he did not give up, as he pressed on with his vision. Nearly four years after its formation, HelpLaw Ghana was able to raise about US$5,000 from friends and relatives of the founder through the GlobalGiving platform. The organization was then able to secure a small rented accommodation in April 2013 for an office space. Once there was an office to work from, the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice of the Fordham Law School in New York sponsored an internship program with stipends for four interns to work for HelpLaw Ghana from July through September, 2013.
You and your organization can also help. Please read on.
You can get involved in two ways:
You can donate funds to support the activities of HelpLaw Ghana and prevent at least one more person from going to jail just because he or she is unable to hire the services of a lawyer.
Alternatively, if you are an attorney or are interested in providing support services for one, you may volunteer your professional skills and talents to HelpLaw Ghana for the benefit of our unfortunate citizens who are mostly incarcerated because of their lack of resources to hire lawyers to defend them.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email your resume (C.V) to info@help-law.org or eric@help-law.org.
